The Secret History

silkscreen, digital print, oil on canvas

19.5” x 36”

2025

this vanitas painting is inspired by Donna Tart's "The Secret History," featuring quotes from the book itself. when thinking about the themes of a vanitas, the group of entitled greek students from this book instantly comes to mind. the novel explores their obsession with beauty and willingness to kill under the guise of furthering their own lives. simultaneously, their study of greek made me think about ancient greece and its relationship to life and death. the ruins of it remain visited by millions of people every year, all marveling over its beauty. and yet, this beauty wasn't enough to make the civilization truly last forever. the ruins in the background are screenprints of photos I took on a trip to greece. the organic shapes painted on top are parts of a vanitas painting I did in highschool and physically manipulated while scanning. the recycling of my old work alludes to our inability to avoid death, but constant attempts to try.

Alënushka

oil and acrylic on canvas, mounted on wood

24” x 30”

2025

inspired by viktor vasnetsov’s painting of the same title, this piece explores my own relationships to nature, my culture, and my self. alënushka is a russian folktale character who, among other things, represents loneliness and isolation, looking to nature as a source of solace. for me, travel and nature, as well as art making, act as means of escaping reality, granting me a chance to be alone but not lonely. my piece is allusion to vasnetsov’s, but also a physical representation of an allegorical ‘other’ place, an ‘elsewhere’, whether that be the foreign country this landscape depicts, the mental place i go when i am fully immersed in the painting process, or a hypothetical world in which there is peace.
