floral portraits
motivated by the coming of spring and inspired by Egon Schiele’s masterful depictions of flowers, this conversation explores florals as a motif and a subject of portraiture.
to me, flowers are closely tied to femininity, as is ceramics. in this series of vessels, i continued manipulating form through bodily impact, embracing the vessels. imprinted in them are various plants, also leaving their mark.
in the paintings, flowers serve as reminders of life, posing as physical representations of spring. yet, they also serve as a reminder of ephemerality— a beautiful thing that inevitably dies, much like humans do. we both experience the same cycle of life.
and like us, flowers have personalities and attitudes— some are sensitive, others resilient and headstrong, some prickly, and others velvety and inviting. where this conversation started off with flowers as a recurring thought, it evolved into them as the subject— a mirror of myself.
